Director of Spinal Cord and Spine Surgery at Kunming Tongren Hospital, Chief Physician, Professor and Master’s Supervisor of Fourth Military Medical University. Graduated from Third Military Medical University in 1974 and completed the Cross-Century Talent Fund Program at Second Military Medical University in 1995. He studied and visited multiple universities in the US and Hong Kong. He is the founder and first director of National Spinal Cord Injury Treatment Center of the former Kunming General Hospital of PLA (Hospital 43).

He serves as a standing committee member of multiple domestic and international academic committees on spinal cord injury, and Vice Chairman of Editorial Board of Journal of Military Medicine. As principal investigator, he has led multiple international, national, military and Yunnan provincial research projects on spinal cord injury, securing total research funding of 30.11 million RMB by 2015. Awards include the Second Prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award, Second Prize of Military Medical Achievement Award and First Prize of Yunnan Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award. He enjoys Special Post Allowance for Outstanding Military Professionals, published 6 SCI papers, and authored the chapter “Spinal and Spinal Cord Injury” in Naval Battlefield Surgery.

Dr. Zhu’s team has treated more than 10,000 acute and chronic spinal cord injury patients. He pioneered combined spinal-spinal cord surgery, internal decompression for acute spinal cord injury, adhesiolysis for chronic spinal cord injury, as well as Kunming Walking Training Protocol and evaluation criteria. His therapeutic outcomes have drawn international attention and recognition in the field of spinal cord injury.
